Ardara get it easy against Bundoran

    All-County League Division 2

    Ardara 4-12

    Bundoran 1-12

    By Frank Craig

Ardara had too much for a depleted Bundoran on Sunday with the home side’s ability to find the net proving the ultimate difference in this contest.

The Pearse Park men were minus their county man Paddy McGrath for this outing. But with Francie Martin unable to call on the services of both Jamie and Paul Brennan, Realt na Mara really struggled without their considerable influence at either end of the field.

Adrian Brennan’s men exploded out of the blocks, pinging 2-4 uninterrupted to open up a 10-point advantage just nine minutes in.

Big Brendan McNelis hammered over the first two points of that initial blitz. Shane O’Donnell followed it up with the game’s first goal. Excellent build-up play from Gareth Concarr and Lorcan O’Donnell forged the opening, leaving O’Donnell with the simplest of tasks at the back post.

With good spadework from Kelvin Slowey, Tomás Boyle then pushed Ardara out to 1-3 before another green flag – this time raised by Lorcan O’Donnell – stretched the hosts’ advantage to nine. O’Donnell quickly added a point for the rampant Ardara.

Sluggish Bundoran needed a response. When they did finally get off the mark it was a big one as Johnny Boyle slammed home to the Ardara net. But that headway was cleaned out almost instantly as Concarr netted at the other end.

Gary Clancy swung a first Bundoran point over the bar but again Ardara found a response through the impressive McNelis. McNelis added a fourth point, this time from a free, to leave it 3-6 to 1-1, 24 minutes in.

Tommy Hourihane, also from a placed ball, and Pauric Rooney did manage to drag the Seasiders out to 1-3 four minutes from the break. Just before the short whistle Boyle, looking lively inside, left it 3-8 to 1-3 with Ardara exiting with a 11-point upper hand.

Boyle got Bundoran on the board first following the restart. Ardara got moving in the second stanza through O’Donnell. Another Hourihane free pushed Bundoran to 1-5 by the 39th minute. A Gary Clancy free reeled Ardara’s lead back to single digits.

Much improved, Bundoran shaved another point off the lead, again through a Clancy free. A third Clancy (free) effort on the bounce left scope for a nervy final 10 minutes for Ardara. A game that had looked completely beyond Bundoran at the break was somehow being dragged back their direction.

A settling CJ Molloy point finally derailed the visitors’ ambitions of a comeback.  Hourihane, again from a free out of the hands left it 3-10 to 1-9.   However, a Gareth Concarr goal eight minutes out from the end extinguished any lingering hopes Realt na Mara had of staging a late revival.

Nicolas Maguire followed that up with an eleventh Ardara point. Before the end, Clancy spun over a beauty with the outside of the right from way out the park. Shane O’Donnell and Clancy (free) swapped late overs but it was the Pearse Park men that grabbed the full quota of points on offer with what was, in the end, a convincing win.
